How to create a "luxe" multifunctional room (guest-children's room combination)

Updated: Aug 28, 2022

I am sure, we all have that room in our home which requires you to combine room functionality. If you are on the lookout for ideas in creating your own multifunctional room, I hope this will inspire you.

Since we have just an two-bedroom apartment, I had to get a bit creative with my sleeping arrangements. In addition to our bedroom, we have a small guest room which had to accommodate not just a bed but also a wardrobe(for storing our "next-season" clothes). We were planning to have kids and we also love to have friends and family over, so the dilemma was how to design that room in such, that it will allow us to use it in more than one way?

When planning this room, I had in mind a cosy luxe boutique hotel room(just in smaller dimensions) and I tried to make it measure up that standards. The hardest part of using children's room as an inviting and comfortable guest room is the ambiance and the choice of furniture and finishes.

For start, I kept the background as neutral as possible(no bright colours or children's typical prints) in the colour of the walls, as in the furniture and finishes. In order to give the space more dimension, I used different materials in the same colour palette(e.g. leather in bed and sofa; faux throw on the bed, cow hide rug).

Second, a comfortable and a reasonable size bed it's the key piece of furniture in any bedroom. The choice depends on the space available(e.g. daybed, sofa-bed, murphy-bed). Though, beds have a tendency to take up a lot of a space in a small room, I decided to go anyway for a double-bed (140 x200 cm) to inject that comfy boutique hotel room flair.

Third, by adding a small size sofa, a lamp close by it and a small side table, I made sure there's a comfy place to sit and enjoy a book or a morning coffee. Who says you can't have it all? Here, a bit of creativity was necessary. I wanted to create two distinct areas, one for sleeping and one for sitting. And I achieved that by dividing the two areas with a gorgeous "Opus Incertum" bookcase, which not just displays my favourite books, but also has the role to provide privacy.

The sitting area can be easily replace with a baby crib(when the times are right) or a desk(e.g. for the home office or for children's homework space)

I hope you enjoyed it and you could see, that you can have it all, without cutting from luxury and comfort.
