My best kept secrets on decorating small spaces

Updated: Aug 28, 2022

No matter how small your space is, there are few designer tricks to make it feel much bigger than it appears to be, without sacrificing style.

1. Use light-coloured, exposed-leg(with thin legs -floating) and see-through furniture. Light-coloured sofas can help a small living room feel bigger and more airy because it does not stand out in the way that dark furniture does(dark colours absorb the light). In terms of the size of the sofa, don't go for the ones with the wide arms, because that it will reduce the amount of the seating that you have; go for something that has narrow arms and that it will look very elegant.

The glass top coffee table is a prime example of a see-through or transparent furniture piece; because of its transparent nature it will disappear into the space. Also when placed on top of a beautiful rug, you are still able to enjoy the beauty of the rug underneath. By using furniture with exposed-legs(like the sofa or the coffee table), you can add furniture into the room without taking a lot of floor space. By elevating the furniture from the floor, you get to see all that floor space underneath and that will keep your eye moving and the space won't feel claustrophobic.

2. Multifunctional furniture with maximum functionality, like this ottoman shown in the picture. It can be used as a coffee table or extra seating and the best is that it has a hidden storage inside for all the small bits you don't always use.

3. Expand your space with mirrors. Mirrors are reflective and will bounce the light coming in, making the space feel larger and airier.

HOW I DID IT IN MY HOME:

4. Nesting tables are great space saving solutions for small spaces. They allow you to save space without having to give up the comfort of having a lot of furniture. Plus these can also serve as night stands, coffee tables and side tables. DO IT MY WAY, mix and match for more personality. Mixing materials, colours and textures elevates a space and creates a fresh effect.

5. Daybeds are an excellent choice for any room. It's a multifunctional piece that fits well in a guest room, office or a living room. It can serve as a seating sofa which can transition into a sleeping sofa for the overnight guests. When not occupied by guests, a daybed serves the same function as a sofa, giving the occupant, their family and friends some place to sit; it's a hybrid of a sofa and a bed. DO IT MY WAY and place it in the living room as an extra seating possibility. It is that elegant and practical piece of furniture which when placed in front of the window will not block the amount of light coming in(and I sometimes use it as a sun lounger for a day dream somewhere under the palms:)

6. Organic shapes: A round table works well in small rooms and smaller squared rooms. The circular shape does away with corners that can take up coveted space. Plus, it's ideal for intimate get-together since each person will face the centre of the table, giving everyone the opportunity to join the conversation.
